The UK practical driving test typically lasts around 40 minutes and is designed to check that you can drive safely and confidently on your own. Here’s the general structure you can expect.
Eyesight and vehicle safety check
Before you start driving, you’ll read a number plate at a set distance, then answer one “tell me” vehicle safety question before setting off and one “show me” question while driving.
General driving and independent driving
Most of the test involves driving in various road and traffic conditions while following directions from the examiner, plus a period of independent driving using either a sat nav, traffic signs, or a mix of both. This checks you can make sensible decisions on your own.
Manoeuvres
You’ll be asked to complete at least one manoeuvre, such as parallel parking, bay parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing. Practising each of these smoothly, not just once but repeatedly in different real settings, builds the confidence that shows on test day.
Faults
You can make a limited number of minor faults and still pass, but a single serious or dangerous fault means an overall fail. Your instructor can help you understand which habits tend to tip into “serious” territory so you can iron them out before test day.
